Small classes and hands-on experience

An essential part of the Master is that participants get hands-on experience. This is ensured through:

Based on leading international research

The programme is closely linked to the internationally well establish research environment at the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen. The responsible course leaders from the department are leading within their area of research. As follows the Master programme is based on and incorporates the newest research, methods and equipment in the teaching.

The programme furthermore invites leading international researchers to participate in the teaching. In this way the Master students are given the opportunity to learn from the best capacities within the field.

Meets the current challenges for a small animal veterinary practitioner

It is important for us that the Master programme is closely linked to the reality in small animal practice.

The Danish Veterinary Association plays an important role in facilitating this and through its members and international collaboration, has the knowledge on the current challenges and future perspectives for small animal practitioners.

The teaching and examinations are to the extent possible connected to particular challenges within the student’s workplace, for instance development of evidence-based approaches to particular patient problems, and development of diagnostic and treatment protocols.

Accredited, coherent and qualifying study programme

The Master programme is developed as a coherent post graduate education. There is alignment and progression between each course. Each new course builds on the knowledge, skills and competencies of prior courses. In this way the Master programme can provide research-based continuing and professional education at a very high and specialised level.

By enrolling in a coherent study programme the participant will also have the opportunity to form new networks with fellow students and teaching resources.

The Master is further more accredited by both The Danish Accreditation Institution (ACE Denmark) and the Veterinary Continuous Education in Europe (VetCEE), guaranteeing an internationally recognized degree with a high level of quality. Read more on the accreditation.

Excellent location and facilities

At the Master programme in Companion Animal Science we stress that teaching and instructions are linked with hands-on practicals. All post graduate courses for companion animal veterinarians are therefore situated at The University Hospital for Companion Animals, Department of Veterinary Clinical and Animal Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. The Hospital provides an excellent location and facilities for small animal continuing education:

  • State-of-the-Art surgical facilities used for both teaching and research purposes. The surgery section is fully equipped to perform minimally invasive surgery.
  • Cardiology section with an advanced echocardiography unit.
  • A central laboratory that apart from equipment for routine bloodwork, has equipment for advanced diagnostic analyses of hemostatic and inflammatory disorders, flow cytometry, and advanced endocrinological assays.
  • In addition to digital radiography and fluoroscopy, the imaging section is equipped with CT, MRI, scintigraphy, ultrasound and a DEXA scanner.
  • Microscopy unit: The clinical pathology laboratory can accommodate 50 students with a microscope for each student. Instructors can interact electronically with one or more students and the students can interact electronically with the instructor as well as with other students.
