Stijn Niessen

Dr. Niessen works as Professor and Head of Internal Medicine at the Royal Veterinary college in London, where he is Deputy Clinical Director of Small Animal Referrals. He is Past President of the European Society of Veterinary Endocrinology and Director of the RVC’s Diabetic Remission Clinic (www.facebook.com/RVC.Diabetic.Remission.Clinic), which aims to uncover the recipe for best diabetic treatment practice.

Background

Dr. Niessen is from the Netherlands and graduated from Ghent University in Belgium. He then completed an internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, followed by completion of a 3-year Small Animal Internal Medicine Residency at the Royal Veterinary College. He then studied for a PhD in Diabetes Mellitus at the RVC and the Medical School in Newcastle from 2006 to 2009. Stijn gained his status of European Specialist in Internal Medicine in 2007 (Diplomate ECVIM). 

Dr. Niessen is the mastermind behind the new Pet Diabetes App - available for free download onto smartphones and tablets.

Dr. Niessen will be teaching on the Internal Medicine Module on the compulsory course.
