Abstract

In human medicine, lung ultrasound has been used for three decades. In veterinary medicine this bedside tool is a rather new diagnostic technique, focusing on artefacts generated because of pathophysiological events taking place in the lungs and thoracic cavity. An advantage of lung ultrasound is that it can be performed quickly, and the performer needs limited specialisation to interpret the results. This article describes the theory behind lung ultrasound, a protocol on how to perform the examination and which artefacts are seen. Common pathophysiological conditions are presented by describing their characteristic ultrasonographic findings.

Resumé

Lungeultralyd er en udbredt diagnostisk modalitet, der humant har været anvendt i tre årtier. Det er dog et forholdsvist nyt redskab i den veterinære værktøjskasse, og baseres på artefakter genereret sfa patofysiologiske tilstande i thorax og lungerne. En klar fordel ved teknikken er, at den er hurtig at lære, udføre og tolke. Denne opgave beskriver teorien bag lungeultralyd, protokol for udførelse og artefakter. Desuden beskrives patofysiologiske tilstande ofte set i klinisk praksis, sammenkoblet med de karakteristiske ultrasonografiske fund.
